Submission Guidelines

Thank you for considering The Serulian as a potential platform for your literary work. We are excited to read your submissions! Please review the following guidelines to ensure that your work meets our requirements:

General Guidelines:

  • The Serulian accepts submissions in the genres of fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and experimental writing.
  • All submissions must be in English.
  • We only consider previously unpublished works. This includes self-published works, online publications, and any other form of public distribution.

Submission Format:

  • Submissions should be typed and formatted in a legible font (preferably Times New Roman, 12pt) and double-spaced.
  • For fiction, creative nonfiction and hybrid works, please limit your submissions to a maximum 1 piece of 3,000 words at most.
  • You may submit up to 3 flash fiction pieces, with maximum of 700 words per piece. Each flash must be contained on a separate page in a single document.
  • For poetry, you may submit up to 5 poems, with each poem contained on a separate page in a single document.

How to Submit:

  • All submissions must be sent via email to submissions@theserulian.com.
  • In the subject line of your email, please indicate the genre of your submission (e.g., Fiction Submission, Poetry Submission).
  • Include your contact information (name and email address) in the body of your email. We will keep this information confidential.
  • Attach your submission as a Word document or PDF. Do not paste the text into the body of the email.

Cover Letter:

  • Include a brief cover letter in the body of your email. Introduce yourself and provide a short bio (100 words or less) highlighting your writing experience, publications, or any relevant background information.

Simultaneous Submissions:

We understand that writers often submit their work to multiple publications simultaneously. If your work is accepted elsewhere, please notify us immediately.
If your submission is accepted for publication elsewhere while under consideration at The Serulian, please withdraw it promptly via email.

Response Time:

  • We aim to respond to all submissions within 1 to 2 weeks. However, please note that response times may vary depending on the volume of submissions we receive.
  • Please refrain from inquiring about the status of your submission before one month has passed.

Rights and Compensation:

  • The Serulian acquires First Serial Rights for published works. Upon publication, all rights revert to the author.
  • We currently do not offer a compensation for your published pieces. Writers are encouraged to share their Venmo, Cash App or Ko-fi to be linked to their published works.
